Back to the Future Graffiti: Ernest Illm plays the main role

Currently working as artistic director in Paris, Ernest Illm first made a name for himself in Bordeaux where he spent his teenage years. To find his style so unique, he was inspired by the visual culture of the 1980s and 1990s. With light, glitches (visual distortions during disturbances on screens) and radiant effects, the artist’s psychedelic graphics is steeped in the retro-futuristic vibe of the VHS era.

This duality is expressed not only in the balance between the passion for the past and for the future but also in the choice of colors and lines. By combining hot and cold, softness and brutality, Ernest Illm creates works that reflect on space and on the mysterious cosmology of our universe. He skilfully masters a wide range of tools and software, which allows him to practice his art in a heterogeneous way.

At the crossroads of urban and digital art, Ernest Illm expresses himself on multiple surfaces. In one of his interviews, he expresses it clearly: “The walls are my favorite field. I find the context incredible: to paint a large surface in a few hours and have the result immediately ”. We hope that the artist will soon do us the honor of embellishing spots in Lyon to immerse yourself in nostalgia for the 8-bit era.
